_I was telling my kids a story about my own childhood the other day, and it had my husband in stitches. I’m not sure why, but for what it’s worth, here’s the story.

When I was a kid, I was a pretty picky eater. Oh, who am I kidding? I still AM a picky eater! Although I’m not nearly as bad as I was as a kid. Anyway, in addition to my being a picky eater, my mother was a horrible cook. She did criminal things to food, I kid you not. How much of her bad cooking contributed to me being a picky eater, one will never know.

One time, I must have been around 10 or 11, she made something for my dinner that – best as I can recall, was either mushrooms or Brussels sprouts. It was round and slimy, I remember that, and I would not eat it. It looked weird, it smelled awful, and it was slimy. No way. Would. Not. Eat.

I can be a stubborn girl when I have a mind to.

My mother yelled at me, threatened me, all kinds of things she told me would happen if I didn’t eat the science experiment reject in front of me. Eventually she picked up a piece of whatever it was off my plate and tried to shove it in my mouth.

Oh no, we are so not going there! I clasped my hand over my mouth as an extra barrier of protection. This was a battle of epic proportions!

My mother, in her rage and frustration, leaned over and bit my hand, the hand covering my mouth. She bit me! I remember screaming, and I had a set of lungs on me too, it’s a wonder the neighbors on the other side of the wall didn’t call the police.

At this point in the story, Darc busted up laughing. I mean to tell you, he almost had tears running down his face, and that’s quite a feat of accomplishment for me! Usually I’m the one splitting a gut at his stories.

“Why are you laughing?” I asked him. “My knuckles were bloody and had teeth marks and everything!”

I try to remember that my beloved is a writer of horror fiction so things often strike him in a way they don’t other people.

“Oh my gosh,” he replied, “‘Eat or be eaten!’ That’s just priceless.”

I guess it does have sort of a vampire quality to it. Eat or be eaten. Who knows? Maybe I’ll make it into one of his stories yet!

I do! I got one the same time Darc got his. :) We're in the process of looking for a host though, and using different software. This'll do in the meantime. :)

Oh, God that's funny. That's funny! It was like some twisted sense of Darwinism at work. Only the wrong one was being victimized. REVERSE Darwinism!

I have no idea why it tickled me so -- don't forget I was sleep deprived and rummy, too, so that might've contributed. But it caught me just right that night. Whew!

She bit you?! Holy!

Well... My Mom bit me once, too, but totally different reason.

She really wanted you to eat whatever she made! My folks were such slackers when it came to insisting we eat stuff, they gave up quickly and never reinforced their threats. It's amazing I grew up to love everything. (and brussels sprouts are good)

My Mom bit me because was a biter when I was a toddler, and I bit my cousin once and made him cry, her getting after me wasn't getting through so she grabbed my arm and bit me back. Yeah... the biting ended shortly after that I'm told.

Yep - crazy, isn't it?

See, I might do like your mom did with a biter baby, like a little nip that's really a pinch and startles more than hurts. But I wouldn't bite to the point where I drew blood. That's just wrong.

I didn't even bite back when I got bitten during nursing! LOL Yelled and gave a little smack to make them stop but that's it, and that was short lived too. :)

Oh the nursing bites... *shudder*

When the nurses were teaching me all about nursing in the hospital they all approached it a little differently, which was fine, but this one nurse. Oh, this one nurse, if I could have found her afterwards, I may have been apt to hit her (some 19 or 20 year old LPN who doesn't have babies to boot and only knows what the text book tells her to say).

She came in to check on things, and ask how the nursing was going, and I was beyond sore from everything and suddenly having something sucking on my boob 24/7, and she said "well then you're doing it wrong" (hmm... funny, the other nurses and lactation specialists were AMAZED at how quickly he latched and I had it figured out considering I had a C-Section). So she told me to try again and let her see what I was doing wrong.

I get myself situated and try to get him to latch... I winced, it hurt... and she told me to take him off immediately and go again. And she repeated this with me for about 10 minutes until I finally refrained from wincing enough that she was satisfied that he was on there without hurting me. It was agonizing, and after she left I just bawled.

The next morning, another nurse came in to talk to me and see how things were going, and I told her about the night before and she's all "oh my goodness no, honey! It's going to hurt at first, you've never nursed before, your body needs to adjust, if you have a good latch, it won't hurt after a few seconds. It's when it doesn't stop hurting that it's wrong, and you need to release him and try again."

I was so relieved. I still had three more days stuck in the hospital under nurses supervision. If they ALL were going to be like the fresh one, I would have lost it. However, it was short lived anyway, we went to formula some time after.

@Onyx - I am SO sorry you went through that! So unnecessary and uncalled for! It just adds so much more pressure on a new mommy that she simply doesn't need.

*hugs*
